Minecraft is now a haven for freedom of the press

Reporters Without Borders has created a virtual library within the online world of Minecraft that allows citizens in countries with repressive governments to access information that is otherwise blocked or controlled.

“The Uncensored Library” will open its virtual doors on March 12, the World Day Against Cyber Censorship. It houses articles from journalists in five countries (Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam) that were all originally censored by those governments. They are presented as books in both English and their language of origin.

سوريا والبحرين واليمن في أسوأ تصنيف لهابمناسبة نشر التصنيف العالمي لحرية الصحافة في 25 كانون الثاني/يناير 2012، تعتبر مراسلون بلا حدود أن "التغييرات التي طرأت على الطبعة العاشرة من التصنيف العالمي لحرية الصحافة كثيرة. وهي تغييرات كفيلة بأن تعكس حقيقة الأحداث التي يحفل بها العالم العربي بشكل خاص. لقد دفعت عدة وسائل إعلام غالياً ثمن تغطيتها التطلعات الديمقراطية وحركات المعارضة فيما تبقى الرقابة المفروضة على القطاع الإعلامي رهان حياةٍ وسلطةٍ للأنظمة الاستبدادية والقمعية. وقد ساهم العام 2011 في إبراز الدور الأساسي الذي يؤديه مستخدمو الإنترنت في إنتاج المعلومات ونشرها.

رصد المعهد الدولي للصحافة الذي يتخذ من العاصمة النمساوية (فيينا) مقرا له، مقتل 103 صحفيين خلال عام 2011 جراء مزاولتهم لمهنة الصحافة حيث يوجد أكثر من ثلث هذا العدد في أمريكا اللاتينية. وقال المعهد في بيان - نقلت قناة "فرانس 24" الاخبارية اليوم (الخميس) مقتطفات منه - إنه بمقتل 36 صحفيًا، فإن أمريكا اللاتينية تعد أكثر المناطق على مستوى العالم دموية بالنسبة للصحفيين عام 2011.

Reporters Without Borders condemns yesterday’s arrests of reporters, photographers and bloggers while covering a street protest in Moscow against the results of the previous day’s parliamentary elections and the irregularities that accompanied the polling.
“There was no justification for preventing journalists from covering a political event of this importance.” Reporters Without Borders said. “It was their job to cover it. The media should not have to pay the price of the government’s paranoia. The judicial authorities should immediately release the journalists and bloggers still in police custody.”

Le prix de la liberté de la presse 2011 a été décerné mercredi 7 décembre 2011 au caricaturiste syrien Ali Ferzat et à l’hebdomadaire birman, Weekly Eleven News. Reporters sans frontières et Le Monde, avec le soutien de TV5MONDE, sont heureux de décerner le prix 2011 à deux symboles de courage, le dessinateur de presse syrien Ali Ferzat et le média birman Weekly Eleven News . La 20e cérémonie du prix de la liberté de la presse s’est tenue à l’auditorium du Monde, à Paris, le mercredi 7 décembre 2011.

طالبت الأمم المتحدة ، اليوم الجمعة، المجلس العسكرى، بالإفراج عن المدون علاء عبد الفتاح، ودعا مكتب حقوق الإنسان التابع للمنظمة السلطات المصرية إلى الإفراج عن عبد الفتاح وغيره ممن يحاكمون عسكرياً للمارستهم حرية التعبيير. وقال روبرت كولفيل، المتحدث باسم المفوض السامى لحقوق الإنسان، إن على مصر "ضمان الاحترام الكامل لحرية التعبير" بعد تسعة أشهر من خلع الرئيس حسنى مبارك، مشيرا إلى أن وكالته "قلقه حيال ما يبدو أنه تراجع لمساحة حرية التعبير والاجتماع" فى مصر، مضيفا أن الوكالة تشعر بخيبة الأمل حيال تجاهل دعواتها إلى مصر برفع حالة الطوارئ وإنهاء المحاكمات العسكرية للمدنيين.

I am writing this note with a deep sense of shame. I have just been moved from Tora Investigative [jail], at my request and insistence, because I simply couldn’t withstand the difficult conditions there: because of the darkness, the filth , the roaming cockraoches, crawling over my body night and day; because there was no courtyard, no sunshine, but especially the darkness.

Thousands gathered on Monday in downtown Cairo's Talaat Harb Square demanding the release of Alaa Abd El-Fatah, one of Egypt's most well-known bloggers and political activists, and expressing support for his decision to refuse to be questioned by the military prosecution on the grounds that it had no business interrogating civilians.

Reporters Without Borders is worried about Hossein Ghoureir, a blogger who has been reported missing by his colleagues and who has probably been arrested. Aged 30 and the father of two children, he has organized and participated in many Palestinian solidarity campaigns. In his blog, he condemned the war in Lebanon in 2006 and campaigned against Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights.
Sounding the alarm about Ghoureir’s “disappearance,” online activists have called on the Syrian authorities to provide information about the circumstances and reason for his detention.
British journalist Sean McAllister has meanwhile revealed that he was detained by the authorities in Damascus for five days last week while working undercover on a report for Channel 4 News. He has given Channel 4 some grim insights into the mistreatment and torture of government opponents in Syrian prisons .

وصفت شبكة «سى. إن. إن» الأمريكية جريدة «المصرى اليوم» بأنها «أكبر صحيفة مستقلة يومية فى مصر بمعدل قراءة يصل إلى نصف مليون نسخة»، مؤكدةً أن محررى الصحيفة اختلفوا كثيرا مع نظام الرئيس السابق حسنى مبارك، ومع ذلك تحدت الصحيفة جميع المخاطر وتعمد محرروها البيات فى مقر الجريدة والمطبعة لمواصلة النشر.

Reporters Without Borders called today on Egypt’s military regime to stop the “threats, arrests, interrogations and physical violence” it said the country’s journalists and bloggers had been subjected to in the months since the revolution that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak.

أصدرت منظمة مراسلون بلا حدود مذكرة عرض على المجلس العسكري تستنكر فيها الضغوط التي يتعرض لها الصحفيون والمدونون في الأشهر الأخيرة في مصر، حيث أصبحت التهديدات والاعتقالات والاستجوابات وأعمال العنف العملة السائدة في مصر بعد الثورة، على حسب البيان.
