About 50 Islamist demonstrators were arrested yesterday for trying to attack the offices of a TV channel that had shown a controversial movie.The film, Persepolis, is based on Marjane Satrapi's graphic novels about growing up during and after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

قرّرت نقابة الصحفيين التونسيين تكليف لجنة خاصّة بإعداد قائمة سوداء بأسماء صحفيين تورطوا مع النظام السابق.
وتشكّلت لجنة تضمّ ثلاثة عشر صحفيا قبلت ترشحاتهم على أساس "النزاهة والتجربة", و"عدم الاشتراك في الانقلاب على النقابة الشرعية" في 2009، وذلك استجابة لطلب الصحفيين في المؤتمر الثاني للنقابة، الذي عُقد مطلع يونيو الماضي، بتطهير قطاع الإعلام من رموز الفساد بعد الثورة. وتمّ تعيين نقيب الصحفيين السابق ناجي البغوري منسقا للّجنة التي ستعمل تحت إشراف رئيسة المكتب التنفيذي الجديد لنقابة الصحفيين, وعضو بالنقابة مكلف بالحريات, وفقا للجزيرة نت.وستحدد اللجنة في اجتماعاتها المقبلة معايير القائمة السوداء التي ستعتمدها لضبط أسماء الصحفيين بناء على درجة اعتداءاتهم بحق الصحفيين والمهنة.

The potential of the Internet as a political tool intrigues scientists and politicians alike. Particularly in the Middle East, the most frequent narrative is that the mere availability of alternative sources of information will empower political actors that are marginalized by the traditional media controlled by authoritarian regimes. Indeed, the protest movements in authoritarian countries interact creatively with this new medium to get their message across in an environment marked by censorship and repression. Comparing the patterns of Internet use for political mobilization in Egypt and in Tunisia, this article shows how the Internet as a relative free space can be a vital factor in opening windows and expanding the realm of what can be said in public.

The uprisings in the Arab World have changed the Western political landscape dramatically. While the outcome of the changes is not yet clear, the general consent is that the media – particularly social media – has played a pivotal role in mobilizing the masses and bringing down authoritarian rulers.  Revolutions are not produced by the media. However, recent events in North Africa and the Middle East have illustrated that digital applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and others have become decisive tools of political empowerment and mass mobilization.

''مات وأحيا صوت الحق''.. بتلك الكلمات الموجزة عبر بعض شباب ''فيسبوك'' عن رأيهم فى ''خالد سعيد'' أو ''شهيد الطوارىء'' كما يطلق عليه البعض، عن طريق فعاليتهم والتى أسسوها مُقررين عن طريقها إحياء ذكرى وفاة ''خالد'' الأولى.
مؤسس الفعالية شخصاً يُدعى ''عبده أسامة'' وهو احد أعضاء الحملة الشعبية لدعم البرادعى ومطالب التغيير، ويطالب ''أسامه'' الشباب بالتدوين عن سعيد بعد مرور عام كامل على رحيله وعدم حصوله على حقه حتى الآن على الرغم من كونه احد اهم اسباب دفع الشباب للقيام بالثورة بحثاً عن الحرية، على حد قوله.

Facebook revolution 'a myth', critics say

Last Updated: May 18, 2011Social media helped to communicate the struggle in countries such as Egypt and Tunisia to the world, but not always in a representative way, participants in the Arab Media Forum in Dubai said yesterday.
"The role of social media in the revolutions has been exaggerated," Sultan al Qassemi, a journalist and Twitter user, said. "It did play an important role. But social media facilitated - it did not cause [the uprisings].
"The cause was corruption, graft, lack of human rights and oppression of young Arabs."

PARIS (AP) Reporters Without Borders on Friday gave its annual award for online media freedom to a Tunisian blogging group - highlighting the role of social media in Arab world uprisings this year.

Tunisia's Nawaat.org won the media watchdog's Google-sponsored €2,500 ($3,450) Netizen Prize for efforts to promote freedom of expression online.
