A year or two ago, many people in North America had likely never heard of the Al Jazeera network — or if they had, they probably thought of it as an Arabic TV channel that was primarily devoted to demonizing the West. Thanks in part to the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt and Libya over the past six months, however, millions more have not only heard of the network but turned to it for the authoritative version of events in those countries. And a big part of the network’s success is due to Tony Burman, the former head of the CBC who joined the network in 2008 and is now head of strategy for Al Jazeera in The Americas.

Social Media used by nearly all Middle East journalists - but only 60% use it for work

UAE. The traditional media in the Middle East has embraced the use of social media with 95% of the region’s journalists now using Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks, a major survey published today reveals. However, personal use - such as keeping in touch with family and friends - is the most popular reason for journalists’ use of social media, with just 60% using it as part of their daily working lives and only 35% valuing it as a source of news.

أبرز مدونون من مختلف دول حوض البحر المتوسط دور الإنترنت، وخاصة الشبكات الاجتماعية، كأداة أو منصة أيديولوجية للثورات التي يشهدها العالم العربي. وقال المدونون خلال مشاركتهم في الجلسة الافتتاحية لملتقى المدونين بالمتوسط أمس الجمعة والذي نظمه بيت المتوسط في مدينة أليكانتي الإسبانية، إن وقف التغييرات التي تشهدها مجتمعات الدول العربية يزداد صعوبة بالنسبة لأنظمتها التعسفية لأن الحشد عبر الشبكات الاجتماعية يتجاوزها بشدة.
