PARIS—Al Jazeera, best known for its Middle Eastern news coverage, is taking aim at Europe’s pay-TV market, using sports to build a global media brand, just as owner Qatar is raising its profile by hosting the 2022 World Cup. The broadcaster is racing to launch a new French channel in early June in time for the European soccer championships, offering a service for about 11 euros per month, according to three industry sources. The channel’s name, ‘beIN Sport’, has been trademarked worldwide.

Al Jazeera English has been named News Channel of the Year at this year's Royal Television Society Awards. Tuesday's award saw the five-year-old broadcaster beating competitors including BBC News and Sky News. The Qatar-based channel earned praise for its frontline coverage of the Arab Spring, including the protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square, and for being the first on the scene to report the death of Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan leader.

Egyptian officials have assured the US that they will halt raids on pro-democracy and human rights organisations and return property seized during a crackdown in Cairo, a senior US official says.
The US ambassador in Egypt, Anne Patterson, spoke with members of Egypt's ruling military council on Friday to press US demands that the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) be allowed to resume normal operations, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

The Egyptian elections

The Egyptian elections–occurring in phases, employing a dual electoral system of party and majoritarian selection, and requiring candidates to identify as professionals or workers (with quotas for each category)–is difficult to explain to non-Egyptians (or even to many Egyptians, for that matter).   رفع المستشار احمد  رفعت جلسة  محاكمة مبارك  للتداول . وكانت  هيئة المحكمة استأنفت صباح اليوم جلسة محاكمة مبارك   ونجليه ورجل الاعمال الهارب حسين سالم اضافة الى حبيب العادلي وزير الداخلية الاسبق و6 من معاونيه .   في سياق متصل اعتدى مجموعة من مؤيدي الرئيس المخلوع على قناة الجزيرة التي تقوم بتغطية الاحداث خارج  قاعة المحكمة بالتجمع الخامس . واكد مراسل الجزيرة انه تواجد في المنطقة المخصصة للاعلاميين   وعندما شاهده مؤيدو مبارك اندفعوا اليه واعتدي عليه بعضهم في ظل عدم تدخل قوات الشرطة التي كانت قريبة من المكان  .

في الوقت الذي تحتفل فيه فناة الجزيرة ب عيدها ال15 و تطلق 3 قنوات جديدة احداها باللغة التركية و الأخرى بلغة السواحلية لتوكد انها الشبكة الاكبر و الاكثر تأثير في الاوسط و تنافس علي ريادة الاعلام في نصف الكرة الشرقي اقرأ خبرا ربما يكون نكتة من الخيال. الخبر مفاده ان مسؤولين في ماسبيرو ذبحا خروفين عند افتتاح اسامة هيكل وزير الاعلام لأستوديو 27  لقد قاربت الفكرة في ذهني مشهد تقديم و ذبح القرابين للإله قديما  للتبرك  و استدرار العطف و البركة  هكذا يري  البعض في ماسبيرو اسامة هيكل  يرونه حاكما ولاه عليهم المجلس العسكري و ليس وزير جاء لفترة مؤقتة كما قال ليحقق اهدافا معينة.

Seib defines the “Al Jazeera Effect” as the superseding of the traditional political connections that have brought identity and structure to global politics by the connectivity of new media, a “rewiring of the world’s neural system” (p.175) that is happening at great speed, one which changes the way states and citizens interact with each other, and which offers the individual a chance at a new kind of autonomy. The Arab satellite channel, Al Jazeera, is merely the most visible player in this new universe.

The book is not only nor even primarily about Al Jazeera and indeed, there is not a great deal about Al Jazeera in it that is new. There is a useful summary and discussion about many recently emerged satellite channels including, for example, Al Arabiya, Al Manar, Al Aqsa, Telesur, and emerging new online news sources such as OhmyNews, iTalkNews and Global Voices (a pity Seib did not encounter more acerbic possibilities such as Brasscheck TV, Globalvision or Real News Network). In addition to a discussion about the possibilities of state censorship of new media, especially in China (much of this material now very familiar) and resistance to the global “quest for democratization,” much of the book engages with “clash of civilization” discourses, examining the role of new media in helping generate or sustain the “virtual state,” the virtual Ummah,” (i.e. the collective sense of religious identity uniting Muslims around the world), Jihadi websites, and the prospects for transformations of the Middle East.

أكد أحمد زين رئيس قناة الجزيرة مباشر مصر أن قرار إغلاق القناة هو عودة لسياسات النظام السابق بكل آلياته ووسائله القديمة.
وأرجع زين سبب إغلاق القناة - في تصريح خاص لمصراوى -  لرفع قضيتين على القناة أولهما من أحد الجيران والذي ادعى إنه  متضرر من وجود الجزيرة في البناية مقر القناة بجانب أحد المحامين المغمورين والذي رفع قضية على القناة مدعيا تضرره من وجودها في مصر لدعوتها للاعتصام والتظاهر ووقف عجلة الإنتاج.
وأشار زين أن ذلك الأسلوب هو نفسه أسلوب النظام السابق الذي يصدر أحد المحامين المغمورين من أتباعه ويتخذهم حجة لإحكام القبضة الحديدية علي الإعلام حتى لا يظهر في الصورة  بشكل المانع لحرية الرأي والتعبير.
في سياق متصل أكد زين أن القناة الإخبارية للجزيرة مصر أزعجت السلطات الحاكمة متوقعا   شئ يحاك في الظلام لمستقبل البلاد ويرجى منع وسائل الإعلام من كشف الحقيقة للمصريين.
وأكد زين على عودة القناة للبث خلال ساعات مشيرًا إلى أن جميع إجراءاتهم قانونية و سليمة وهناك موافقات من مدينة الإنتاج الإعلامي.
في حين أكد زين أن الجزيرة تتابع الأحداث في مصر دون عائق من خلال مكاتبها بالدول العربية مضيفا :''مستمرون في اتخاذ الاجرئات القانونية لإعادة فتح القناة من جديد في مصر حفاظا علي أرزاق أكثر من 70 عامل وموظف وصحفي في القناة''.
