  • Bashar al-Assad took advice from Iran on how to handle the uprising against his rule, according to a cache of what appear to be several thousand emails received and sent by the Syrian leader and his wife.
    The Syrian leader was also briefed in detail about the presence of western journalists in the Baba Amr district of Homs and urged to "tighten the security grip" on the opposition-held city in November.
    The revelations are contained in more than 3,000 documents that activists say are emails downloaded from private accounts belonging to Assad and his wife Asma.

    Reports Without Borders strongly condemns the arrest yesterday of the blogger Razan Ghazzawi at the Syria-Jordan border while she was on her way to Amman.
    Since 2009, Ghazzawi has been running the blog Razaniyat, where she campaigns for freedom of expression and gay rights. She also coordinates the Syrian Centre for the Media and Freedom of Expression, which she was to have represented at a workshop in the Jordanian capital on freedom of information in the Arab world.

    In the aftermath of the near-total shutdown of the internet and telephone network in the West Bank and Gaza Strip last week, the Palestinian Authority (PA) is attempting to figure out how, why and by whom Palestine was hacked. Whether the PA ever comes to a conclusive finding is arguable, even if it manages to mobilise the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to conduct an investigation. The Palestinian Minister of Communications has been hinting that a state may be behind the concerted attack - by which he means Israel.

    أعلن القائمون على جائزة الصحفية الروسية والناشطة في ميدان حقوق الإنسان أنا بوليتكوفسكايا، الجمعة عن منح الجائزة، في الذكرى الخامسة لمقتل الصحفية هذا العام، للناشطة السورية رزان زيتونة. ونقلت وكالة الأنباء الروسية (نوفوستي) عن اللجنة قولها إن اختيار زيتونة البالغة من العمر 34 عاماً "يعود لما عانته من تخفٍ ومعاناة بعد أن اتهمتها السلطات في سوريا بالتجسس للغرب، وذلك على خلفية مقالات كتبتها ونشرتها على صفحات الإنترنت حول بشاعة العنف الممارس ضد المحتجين في البلاد".
    وتحوّل الموقع الإلكتروني لرزان واسمه (شيريل) إلى أحد المصادر الأساسية للأخبار حول ما يدور من أحداث وقمع للمظاهرات في سوريا، بعد أن حظرت السلطة على وسائل الإعلام الأجنبية الوصول إلى ساحات الأحداث.

    Today marks the 100th day since the protest movement found its foothold in Syria

    Today marks the 100th day since the protest movement found its foothold in Syria. A 100 days later, more than 1,400 deaths, and three presidential speeches, the protest movement is still in full force. This Friday is being billed “friday of delegitimization”.
    To mark this day bloggers from Syria and elsewhere started a blogging and Twitter campaign called “Blogging Day for Syria”. The campaign called on every blogger to post his article with the hashtag #Blog4Syria. Here are a selection of these
