A new Ipsos survey has found television is the primary source of information for citizens of Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon; while information is mainly obtained from the Internet by Arabs in the Arabian Gulf. Arab citizens spend eight hours a day on average using diverse media.
The research, found that citizens of the six Arab nations studied (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE) spent on average four hours watching TV, use their mobile phones for 1.5 hours, and surf the internet for about one hour a day. In addition, time is spent listening to the radio, reading newspapers and magazines, and playing video games.

Like elsewhere around the globe, social networks are increasingly important in the Middle East, with 32% of Arabs in the surveyed countries found to use social media – primarily Facebook and Twitter.  Significantly, the Ipsos research revealed only 4% of the social network sites used are in Arabic.
The survey also found youth in the Arabian Gulf of both sexes are skilled in the use of ICT services; while 44.9% of internet users in Jordan are women, followed by 36.4% in Lebanon. Of those using social media in Jordan, 36.3% are women, while in Saudi Arabia,32.7% of social network users are women.
Ultimately, Ipsos says, “the internet will be a huge media force in the coming years while the television currently maintains first place.”
