a Forum said Tuesday in their final communique
The forum, themed "Media and Social Issues", added that more attention should be given to e-journalism, particularly those related to youth. The participants also asked the forum secretariat to consider organizing a special session on the widely-used social media networks, such as Facebook and Tweeter.
With regard to the Arab political unrest, the forum urged Arab media outlets to be balanced, neutral, subjective and professional in handling these events, warning against resorting to blackout schemes. The forum cautioned against the danger and the negative impacts of the media coverage that aims to instigate sectarian, tribal and racial seditions in the Arab world.
Arab media institutions should also underscore the link between the free media and democracy and to support freedom of expression. The communiqu encouraged Arab sports journalists to benefit from Qatar's preparation for hosting 2022 World Cup to promote the true image of Arab countries.
Arab media people were encouraged to intensify their efforts to show the important role of Arab women in development plans and their contributions to all sectors. Concluding their gathering, the participants thanked His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister-designate Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah for their sponsorship of the forum.
They have also welcomed the choice of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the guest of honor, Saudi Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal as the "Media Man of the Year" due to his great contribution to the Arab media through his TV channels as well as honoring Prince Salman bin Abdul-Aziz, governor of Riyadh, and granting him the Arab Media Creativity Award of 2011.
The forum also awarded Bahraini Minister of Culture Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa the "Cultural Adaptation to Media" for 2011 and Kuwaiti veteran journalist and chief editor of Al-Seyassah newspaper was given the media stint award. The British Broadcasting Corporation's Arabic section was honored for its role in qualifying Arab media cadres and its successful use of all media tools.
Concluding the gathering, the participants expressed hope their debates would be fruitful and helpful for the efforts exerted to upgrade the performance of all Arab media outlets. The 8th Arab Media Forum (AMF) kicked off on April 24 with the participation of about 500 visitors from outside Kuwait including ministers, media people, journalists, chief editors, and syndicates chairpersons, besides a big number of media people and officials in Kuwait.
It tackled the several key issues related to Arab media, particularly the challenges facing media institutions following the quick and spreading political uprisings in the region. AMF is a well-established forum for Arab journalists and media professionals to allow them debate and discuss issues that are relevant to their work. --- KUNA
