RALLY IN FRONT OF EGYPTIAN EMBASSY IN OTTAWA-

Statement:
Egyptian Canadians for Democracy is appalled by the repeated crimes of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) against peaceful demonstrations in Egypt.
The recent brutal, unprovoked attacks on a peaceful sit-in in front of the Egyptian Ministerial Cabinet in the heart of Cairo saw unprecedented crimes in the history of Egypt. More than seventeen people are now reportedly killed, hundreds injured and hundreds still being detained. Footages of female protesters being stripped, beaten and dragged sent shockwaves around the globe. The state-controlled media is portraying the events as “violent clashes with security forces”, while many video footages and reports from Cairo-based activist groups show that the regime is repeatedly committing crimes against humanity in clear breach of international law that Egypt is committed to.
In one of the latest attempts by SCAF to abort the revolution, several rights groups were raided in Cairo and other Egyptian cities based on allegations that these groups may have received illegal foreign funding. With the upcoming anniversary of the January 25th revolution, we fear that the protesters in Egypt are in imminent danger, especially because the state run media is already using very negative propaganda against the revolutionaries.
We express our strongest condemnation towards the atrocities committed against the people of Egypt in their demand for a free and democratic state, hence the following:
1) We urge the Canadian Government and the International Community to put pressure on SCAF to immediately stop the crimes being committed against peaceful protesters in Egypt.
2) We demand joint efforts from Canada and the International Community to bring all those responsible for these crimes to justice, and to support the pro-democratic movements in Egypt.
3) As Canadians and tax-payers, we demand reassurances from the Canadian Government that any economic contributions to Egypt are not being used for the purchase of arms and weaponry that are being used to maim and kill peaceful protesters.
4) We hold SCAF responsible for the safety of all protesters during planned demonstrations to mark the first anniversary of January revolution.

About Egyptian Canadians for Democracy
A Non-profit Organization, concerned with reaching out to the Egyptian community in Canada and democracy loving Canadians to form an undisputed force of change to positively influence the transition to democracy in Egypt. It is also a starting point for an active front that serves the Egyptian community in Canada and bridges the gaps between Egypt and Canada, both people and governments.
The idea of the group came as a repercussion of recent events taking place in Egypt since the January 25th revolution. It has a political dimension, as well as cultural and social. Yet for the mean time it is more focused on the political dimension and the need to bring to life the role of Egyptians living in Canada in shaping the future of the state that is being born in Egypt following the fall of Hosni Mubarak regime. The group is created by volunteers who are advocates for democracy and human rights. The group is inspired by the positive values of democracy and tolerance that are enjoyed and practiced here in Canada and aspires for all the Egyptians living in Egypt to enjoy it as well. It is meant to include the full spectra of the Egyptian community in Canada, regardless of their faith or political affiliations.
