Egypt’s revolution as it unfolded, in the words of the people who made it

The Twitter accounts of the activists who brought heady days of revolution to Egypt in January and February this year paint an exhilarating picture of an uprising in real-time. Thousands of young people documented on cell phones every stage of their revolution, as it happened. This book brings together a selection of key tweets in a compelling, fast-paced narrative, allowing the story of the uprising to be told directly by the people in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.
Many of the activists were “citizen journalists”, using Twitter to report what was happening. Others used the social network to organize, communicating the next steps necessary for the revolution to move forward. Nearly everyone online gave instant reactions to the extraordinary events occurring before their eyes.
History has never before been written in this fashion. The tweet limit of 140 characters evidently concentrated the feelings of those using Twitter. Raw emotion bursts from their messages, whether frantic alarm at attacks from pro-government thugs or delirious happiness at the fall of the dictator. To read these tweets is to embark a rollercoaster ride, from the surprise and excitement of the first demonstration, to the horror of the violence that claimed hundreds of lives, to the final ecstasy of victory.
Many of those tweeting also took photographs with their phones and these illustrate the book, providing remarkable snapshots from the heart of the action.
Edited by young activists Alex Nunns and Nadia Idle, an Egyptian who was in Tahrir Square when Mubarak fell, Tweets from Tahrir is a highly original take on one of the most important and dramatic events in recent world politics. The result is as gripping as any thriller – but it’s all real.

إذا كانت الثورة المصرية قد بدأت من الفيس بوك فإن أهم تقاريرها تم نشرها على موقع تويتر. “دار أور بوكس للنشر ” – ” OR Books” – قامت بتجميع كل هذه التقارير والمشاركات الموجودة على تويتر في كتاب ” تويتس من التحرير ” وكثير من تلك الرسائل على تويتر هي سرد للثورة المصرية في قصاصات من 140 حرفا أو أقل. وسيتم نشر الكتاب في 21 أبريل , أي ما بعد شهرين من الثورة التي أطاحت بالرئيس المخلوع حسني مبارك. وسوف يباع الكتاب بمبلغ 12 دولار في شكل غلاف عادي و 10 دولار في شكل كتاب إلكتروني
وتكشف صحيفة نيويورك تايمز أن صاحبة الفكرة هي نادية ايدل و اليكس نونس وهم الناشطون ، الذين بدأوا بحفظ سجلات المشاركات على موقع تويتر خلال المظاهرات التي جرت في يناير و فبراير.
وقام السيد نونس بالاتصال في وقت لاحق بكولين روبنسون مؤسس , دار أور بوكس للنشر , وهى دار النشر التي قامت أيضا بنشر الكتاب الشهير going rogue” ” للأمريكية سارة بالين وهو كتاب يشمل مقالات نقدية حول مذكرات سارة بالين السياسية والتي تسخر فيها من كيفيه ذهابها إلى الوضاعة (الحقارة) .
وقال السيد روبنسون يوم الجمعة “ كنت خائفا قليلا من نشر هذا الكتاب لأنني اعتقدت انه سيكون مفككا جدا وأضاف ” لكنه في الواقع يقدم صورة متماسكة للغاية عن ما كان يحدث.” فهذا الكتاب يأخذ القارئ خلال كل يوم من أيام الثورة حتى خلع حسني مبارك يوم 11 فبراير. و قامت السيدة ايدل والسيد نونس بتحرير وجمع وكتابة المقدمات التي ستتم طباعتها في بداية كل فصل.
الإعلان عن الكتاب ، الذي يعتقد انه سيكون الأول من نوعه ، أثار سؤالا واحدا على الأقل في عالم النشر الرقمي : من يملك حقوق نشر رسائل تويتر التي تم إرسالها بواسطة آخرين؟
وأضاف روبنسون ” اعتقد إن إدارة تويتر ستكون داعمة للكتاب” ،. و أضاف ” اعتقد أنها ينبغي أن تكون فخورة لحقيقة أن تكنولوجيتها ساعدت هؤلاء الشباب”. وقال متحدث باسم تويتر أنه إذا تم تسجيل أن كل الناس أعطت تصريح بالنقل والنشر ، فان الكتاب لن ينتهك شروط تويتر للخدمة.

On April 21st, OR Books will publish Tweets from Tahrir: Egypt’s Revolution as It Unfolded, in the Words of the People Who Made It, a collection of dispatches and photographs from Twitter users during Egypt’s dramatic transfer of power last month.
The book contains “a selection of key tweets in a compelling, fast-paced narrative, allowing the story of the uprising to be told directly by the people in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.” The collection will be edited by Alex Nunns and Nadia Idle, with a foreward by author Ahdaf Soueif.
