The Canadian Arab
Institute is proud to announce its first awards gala which will take place at Toronto’s
most unique historical special events venue, The Carlu, on April 4, 2016. The
event will honour Mary Jo Haddad,
former CEO of SickKids, for the excellence with which she built an illustrious
career as a leading advocate of children’s health, and Sheldon Levy, former President of Ryerson, for his innovation and
leadership in city-building, multiculturalism and inclusion.
WHEN: Monday, April 4th, 2016, 6::30 pm
WHERE: The Carlu, 7, 444 Yonge St, Toronto
John
Honderich, of the Toronto Star, will engage in a dialogue
with the honorees about the transformational potential of diversity and
inclusion.
The gala will also shine a spotlight on
Canada’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis. We will welcome Ontario Premier
Kathleen Wynne, who greeted the
first refugees on their arrival in Canada, and Ratna Omidvar, Chair of Lifeline Syria which is coordinating the
arrival of privately sponsored refugees.
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and
internationally-renowned Syrian musician Kinan
Azmeh will be presenting an original composition to celebrate the cultural
contribution of Syrian refugees to Canada.
A portion of the gala proceeds will go to fund 10 mentorships directed
at Syrian refugees.
The evening’s co-chairs, Judith Ramirez and Mohamad Fakih, will welcome over 300 business people, civic
leaders, philanthropists and professionals from the Canadian Arab community and
beyond. The gala will be hosted by John Moore, host of Moore in the Morning on Newstalk 1010, and
soprano Allison Angelo will render a
gender-inclusive version of the national anthem.
