WASHINGTON, Feb 28, 2011 (AFP) - The United States accused the Libyan government on Monday of jamming foreign television broadcasts, saying the move belied Colonel Moamer Kadhafi's claim all was calm in his country.
"Libya is jamming the coverage of news networks including #AlJazeera and #Alhurra. Things are evidently not as calm as the #Qaddafis claim," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said on the microblogging website Twitter.
In a statement to foreign media broadcast on Serbian television on Sunday, Kadhafi dismissed UN sanctions as invalid and claimed calm had returned to Libya as the territories held by the opposition were surrounded.
Al-Hurra, the US-funded Arabic-language channel, said its "broadcasts of the historic events in Libya have been jammed on the Nilesat satellite system" since February 23.
"The Nilesat system, one of the most popular satellite systems in the region, also carries Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya," it said in a statement.
